The coloring and structure of Santos rosewood are similar to the lively appearance of Rio rosewood. For this reason, Santos rosewood is increasingly used in place of the rare Rio rosewood. The strong hue ranges from yellowish red to violet brown. In Santos rosewood, the wavy violet to black tones are often interrupted by so-called “ears”. The light yellow sapwood provides vivid contrast. Because the distribution of the color strips is so uneven, the wood texture can vary greatly.
